Review – Reaper by Lindsey Winsemius

I enjoyed this one! I didn’t know what to expect, but Reaper was a great surprise! The world-building was intriguing and complemented the storyline. Aerina and Marcus were well defined and had nice chemistry. All in all, Reaper turned out to be a nice escape read with a strong romance that kept me turning the pages.

Write What You Know

They say to write what you know. I don’t know who “they” are, but the advice seems sound. Since I’ve been a felony crimes prosecutor, worked the road as a police officer, and now write policy and procedure for the same police department, I decided to combine some of my passions into what is now Divergent Bloodline.

Cops are a rare breed. They witness not only the good people do for each other, but also respond to volatile, emotional situations often resulting in heartbreak. The stress officers work under on a daily basis is incredible. They form strong bonds with fellow cops to survive the mental and physical demands placed upon them. Your partner is more than a friend; your partner protects your back when you enter the building with guns drawn.

Although Divergent Bloodline is a work of fiction and focuses on the romance between a homicide suspect (who happens to be a vampire) and the detective assigned to the case, I tried to capture the special relationship officers share with each other. I hope you enjoy Divergent Bloodline as much as I loved writing it.

Blurb

While tracking down a killer, clues lead homicide detective, Viviane Taylor to suspect, Julian DeMatteo. From the get-go, DeMatteo unsettles and irritates her. He is a force she has never encountered, someone who excites her even though he is forbidden. Her instincts warn that he’s hiding something and she is determined to uncover those secrets.

As king of the vampires, Julian DeMatteo protects the immortal clans. So, when the beautiful, bullheaded cop embroils herself within his world, he must choose between the woman who reminds him of the humanity he has lost or his loyalty to his people.

As confusing emotions awaken inside her, Viviane can either accept her fate as the one chosen to save the immortal race or lose her soul to darkness. With Julian’s help, she fights an evil that would rip her apart in order to forge a new future with the homicide suspect who has stolen her heart.

Excerpt

“Don’t push me away, Viviane,” he rasped in a hoarse gravel of sound. Except for the enticing tremor in her bottom lip, she stood like a statue, the curl of her eyelashes hiding her inquisitive, emerald eyes. Cupping her chin, he lifted her face and dropped his forehead onto hers.

Closing his eyes, his other senses sharpened on the woman quivering against him. Air whispered in and out of her lungs in ragged gasps. The soft brush of her hair teased his skin. The catch in her throat when his hand slid to the small of her back encouraged his slow acquisition of her.

He understood her wish to maintain a professional distance, but her body betrayed her as she leaned into him. With utmost care, his mouth grazed down her face, tasting the lush satin of her skin. Her breath caught. He stilled her halfhearted attempt to step away by pinning her at his side. Flattening his hand against her jaw to keep her from turning, his lips skirted across her cheek, angling toward her mouth. Her pulse skipped, and he smiled an instant before his lips touched hers. In an exquisite, painful burst, his heart exploded and light cascaded into the darkest corners of his soul.

“No,” she gasped, planting her hands on his chest, but his desire to claim her was too strong. He slammed her against the wall with his body and kissed her with a roughness that required no less than total submission.

Review – Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout

4.5 Stars!

I don’t read a lot of YA, but the blurb intrigued me so I decided to give OBSIDIAN a try. Turns out, I’m really glad I did. I pretty much fell in love with Katy while I have a love/hate … mostly love … relationship with Daemon. Great world-building and witty dialog kept me reading way past my bedtime. The developing romance between our young heroes is sweet, yet not without challenges. Of course, I must read the second book, ONYX, to see what’s in store for these two. Now, onward with ONYX …

Review – Hope(less) by Melissa Haag

What a delightful book this turned out to be! I got it on a whim (it was free on Amazon and the blurb sounded interesting) and really didn’t know what to expect. I decided to read a few pages before going to bed and two hours later, I was still in my chair with Kindle in hand, reading!

HOPE(LESS) is written in first POV from Gabby’s perspective and I loved Gabby’s voice. She is a young woman coming into herself who has the ability to see people in different colors. Because of this second sight and the fact she’s different, she discovers that werewolves are real. This isn’t a typical were/human type of story. In fact, Ms. Haag’s take on the genre is not only unique, but really enjoyable.

Clay is the wolf who is destined to be Gabby’s mate and although she tries to get rid of him, he persists in courting her in a fun (and totally unexpected) way throughout most of the book. I won’t give up any details about their burgeoning relationship, but Ms. Haag did a fabulous job building it.

HOPE(LESS) is a young adult romance that packs a clean punch. I enjoyed it immensely.

Review – Chained by Night by Larissa Ione

Wow! I really enjoyed the first book in the series, BOUND by NIGHT, but I loved this one! Hunter is one hot alpha male and Aylin is a remarkable, strong heroine with spunk and sass. I was rooting for them from the beginning. Ms. Ione’s take on the vampire genre is intriguing and unique, her world-building fantastic, and her characters have depth and … well, character! Great read!

Review – Darkest Before Dawn by Amelia Hutchins

I must admit, this book took me by surprise. It was a friend recommendation so I kept reading when it started a bit slow for me. But Ms. Hutchins was just establishing her world and once she’d created the foundation, I had a very hard time putting DARKEST BEFORE DAWN down. I’m usually not a first person POV fan, but Ms. Hutchins did a fantastic job with Emma’s inner dialogue. Some of the things Emma thought and said were too funny! As for Jaeden, well, he’s pretty hard to resist. Strong, domineering, sexy — he has all the ingredients for a sizzling alpha male. The conclusion wasn’t a typical romance ending, but I wouldn’t say it was a cliffhanger either. While I was satisfied by how it ended, Ms. Hutchins definitely paved the way for the next book, which I’ll anxiously and happily wait for. Great start to a new series! Focused. Strong. True. Review – Caressed by Ice by Nalini Singh

Ohhh, my goodness! I really enjoyed this one! Judd is my kind of Psy! I love how he protects Brenna even when his growing love for her is killing him. And Brenna? Well, way to go, girl! She survived hell, stayed sane, and got herself one hot, fantastic man who only has eyes for her. Brenna and Judd are just another example of two people who love each other enough to find a way to be together.

The whole Psy-Changeling world fascinates me and I’m so looking forward to reading more in this amazing series.

Review – Twice Tempted by Jeaniene Frost

So, I raved about ONCE BURNED, the first in the Night Prince series. I went on and on in my review about how fantastic ONCE BURNED was then I read TWICE TEMPTED and Jeaniene Frost exceeded all my expectations. Although I didn’t think it possible, I enjoyed TWICE TEMPTED more than ONCE BURNED. Ms. Frost gives the reader more insight into Vlad and the reasoning why he is so cold to Leila at times. It’s not that he doesn’t love Leila, he’s terrified of loving her too much, losing her, then having to endure the pain of her loss.

Leila is just as stubborn and strong-willed as ever, honing her skills while enduring great highs and lows in her life. Together they make a dynamic, incredible couple.

So, I’ve been told that the Night Prince series is a spinoff of Ms. Frost’s extremely popular Night Huntress series. Although I’ve read the first book in the Night Huntress series, in my haste, I also started this series. Because the characters from Night Huntress bleed over into this one, there were a couple of scenes where I missed some backstory as a result of not reading all the Night Huntress books first. However, that minor bump in the road didn’t stop me from immensely enjoying this book…as you can see from my review. You will not be disappointed with these books, no matter where you start!
